………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Scene2 Dialog1/The sign “Members only” indicates a gay bar !?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Daisuke: This is a bar called “ISLANDS”.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Masashi: It doesn't seem so crowded yet.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Mark: What does that white sign say?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Daisuke:It says “Members only.”
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Miho: Really!? You have to be some sort of member to get in?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Masashi: No, no. That sign's up there to stop straight people from coming in by mistake. That sign is usually posted by gay bars everywhere, not just here in Ni-chome, but also throughout Japan.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Miho: Oh, I see. It's a sort of visual marker that only gays will understand.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Mark: Something like the rainbow flag? ※1
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Daisuke: Well, that's a little different, I think.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Masashi: Also, not every establishment posting that kind of sign is a gay bar, either. There are some bars in places like Ginza that are truly “members-only,” so you have to be careful. Anyway, shall we go in ?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
※1 rainbow flag
Since a rainbow has many colors coexisting with each other in an equal status, it has been adopted in the rainbow flag to represent diversity and equality. The flag is often used as a symbol of LGBTs, as well as LGBT-friendly corporations and groups.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Scene3 Dialog1/Can a woman go in there by herself ?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Masashi: Mark, how ‘bout this shot bar "ARTY FARTY HQ"? ※1 There are several foreigners inside, and it seems to have a welcoming atmosphere that makes it easy to fit in.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Mark: Nice! This place has a mood similar to a shot bar in New York that Miho and I used to go to often.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Miho: I was thinking the same thing. By the way, there do seem to be a lot of women here.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Daisuke: Not all of them came with gay friends, either.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Miho: Can a woman go in there by herself?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Masashi: I don't see any problem. As long as you don't let your hair down too much and cause a ruckus, or create problems for the gay customers. This bar has a separate annex called “THE ANNEX” that seems to have a higher ratio of female customers.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Miho: Hmm, maybe I’ll try going there some time.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Masashi: A good time might be on Saturdays, later at night. It's quite crowded then, but everyone is dancing and getting pumped up.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Miho: Sounds like fun!
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
※1 shot bar A place where drinks are served and paid for one at a time. There aren't any “o-toshi” condiments served, and customers cannot reserve bottles. Also, the staff do not mix socially with the customers any more than necessary. But the drinks are quite cheap, at 500 yen a glass.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Scene3 Dialog9/I've been constantly dumped the past few years.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Miho: The gay world sure runs deeper than I thought, what with people's preferences being broken down by age and body type and all that.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Masashi: And that's not the end of the story, by any means. There's also the “okami” (wolf) fetish for slim but hairy types, and the “kuma”(bear) fetish for fat hairy guys, and the “single-edged eyelid” fetish for guys whose eyes look like that (found often in northern Asians), and the “ugly” fetish for homely guys, and the “suits” fetish for guys who wear suits, and the “mama” fetish for “mama-san” bar managers. There’s even a “dare-sen”※1 (“anybody OK”) fetish for guys who will sleep with anyone!
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Miho: It's hard to keep up, understanding all those categories. But it seems there is something for everybody.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Daisuke: There's even a saying, “there's no garbage to be dumped in Ni-chome.”
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Masashi: Well, I've been constantly dumped the past few years.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Daisuke:Hey, don't get so depressed all of a sudden like that. Shouldn't we be going to Akta pretty soon?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Masashi: Before we do that, though, there's somewhere I want to show you first.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
※1 “dare-sen” (anybody OK) fetish
Used for a gay who can fall in love or have sex with any type of guy. Also includes for those whose preference is not settled yet, or for those whose preference ends up being for the type of the person they originally fell for. The term “erabu-dare-sen” has recently come to be used for those who are not picky about age or body type, but who are particular about facial looks (“erabu” means “choose”).

………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Scene7 Dialog6/Japanese drag queens are really something else!
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Daisuke:Esmeralda’s show is just beginning now!
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Mark:What’s that song?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Daisuke:It’s called an “enka,” a special kind of Japanese ballad, you could say. Esmeralda’s a drag queen ※1 who puts on a passionate show, performing in line with the words of the “enka.”
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Miho:My God! She’s spitting up blood! How scary!
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Mark:I’ve seen a whole lot of different performances, for these three days, but Japanese drag queens are really something else!
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Masashi:Really? But New York supposed to be the home of the true drag queen, isn't it?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Mark:That may be true, but I think Japanese drag queens have a leg up when it comes to originality. This is the first time I've seen a show with lines taken from a movie. In New York, the only kind of show I've seen is where the drag queen just lip-synchs. Although I couldn't understand what they were saying, it was a great new experience.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Masashi:That's because Japanese drag queens, overall, tend toward comedy. Of course there are also those who pursue beauty, too.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
※1 drag queen
Someone who puts on flamboyant makeup and women’s clothing to spice up club events and put on shows. Basically, drag queens put on an excessive parody of their female-ness, and are thus different from cross-dressers who just want to look like ordinary women.
